A Kansas Rocket Lawyer Alternative Without the Platform

Consistent Pricing Is Rarer Than It Should Be

Credit where it is earned. The registered agent line at Rocket Lawyer is priced at $125 annually, and that figure holds steady across every membership tier the company sells. We went looking for the usual promotional first year and there is not one. In a market built on introductory rates that quietly correct at renewal, a provider that quotes one figure and sticks to it across its whole product line is behaving better than most. If you genuinely intend to use the document templates and the attorney consultations, the subscription is a coherent product and the agent slot inside it is priced sensibly.

The Catch Is Structural, Not Deceptive

The catch here is not a hidden fee. It is that the agent appointment arrives wrapped inside a legal services platform, and the platform is where the money goes. Roughly a hundred and twenty-five dollars buys a document library, template access, and attorney time you may or may not touch, with the state appointment along for the ride.

If your actual need is the state appointment, that bundle is an expensive way to buy it. Ask yourself honestly how many contracts you drafted from a template last year. Owners who answer "none" are paying platform prices for a job that consists of receiving envelopes and forwarding them quickly.

What the Kansas Appointment Actually Requires

It helps to see how modest the duty is. K.S.A. 17-7924 requires your registered office to sit somewhere in Kansas with the agent regularly on hand. The statute collapses two ideas into one address: whatever your agent uses as its own place of business is also the registered office, so somebody is genuinely expected to be standing there during ordinary hours when a summons shows up. Post office boxes are excluded, and the Secretary of State's forms rule them out in plain language.

That is the entire specification. An address in this state, a person behind it, and prompt handoff of whatever arrives. It contains nothing that a legal document subscription improves upon. A $125 agent and a $99 agent are held to the identical standard, and the state applies no additional scrutiny to either.

The gap is narrower here than against most of this market, which is a point in Rocket Lawyer's favor and we will not pretend otherwise. The question is simply whether the platform half of the bill earns its place in your particular business.

The Unbundled Version

We sell one service. It costs $99 in year one and $99 thereafter, listed openly on our pricing page. Court papers delivered to our Kansas office are scanned and pushed to you inside the same business day, because a served deadline runs from the delivery and not from when you happen to check in. Your public filings show our Kansas street address in the resident agent field. Nothing further gets offered at checkout. The one add-on that exists, imaging of general business mail at $15 per item, is optional and quoted up front.

Kansas processes the change on form ROA, its certificate of amendment for a new resident agent, a new registered office, or both at once. The state numbers nothing; its business forms carry letter codes, and ROA is the complete designation. For-profit filers pay $30 through the online Change a Business service at sos.ks.gov or $35 mailing paper to Business Services in Topeka.

Because the certificate has to name your incoming agent and the office address that agent will keep, the hire necessarily comes before the filing rather than after it. Complete the appointment, submit the form, watch for the updated record, and only then close the Rocket Lawyer membership.
